Serials Issued in Parts

A serial is issued in parts when each number or issue constitutes more than one physical item. Each part is usually distinguished by numbers or letters and/or an individual title. The parts all have the same common title and usually have the same numeric/chronological designation. (CCM: 17.3.1) CONSER provides three cataloging options for serials issued in parts.

⮚Create Separate records for each part. (CCM: 17.3.3.a). CONSER instructs to create separate records for serials issued in parts under the following situations.  

If the parts can be used independently:

245 00 $a Journal of polymer science. $n Part A, $p Polymer chemistry.

245 00 $a Journal of polymer science. $n Part B, $p Polymer physics.

245 00 $a Journal of polymer science. $n Part C, $p Polymer symposia.

If the parts have their own numbering systems:

245 00 $a Journal of polymer science. $n Part A, $p Polymer chemistry.

362 0# $a Vol. 24, no. 2 (Feb. 1986)-

245 00 $a Journal of polymer science. $n Part B, $p Polymer physics.

⮚Separate records

If the parts are unnumbered:

110 2# $a University of Massachusetts. $b College of Fine Arts. (made-up example)

245 10 $a Catalog of the College of Fine Arts. $p Visual arts.

110 2# $a University of Massachusetts. $b College of Fine Arts.

If the parts are purchased separately.

CONSER instructs not to link parts cataloged separately (CCM: 17.3.3a)

⮚Include all parts on one record with a general 515 note, such as "Issued in parts." (CCM: 17.3.3b)

If the parts cannot be separately recorded and bound due to an integrated numbering scheme, record all parts on the same record.

245 00 $a Mutation research.

362 0# $a Vol. 1, no. 1 (May 1964)-

515 ## $a Beginning in 1973, some volumes. have also a section title, e.g., v. 236, no. 2/3 called Mutation research. DNA repair; v. 244, no. 3 called Mutation research. Mutation research letters. The sections do not have their own volume numbering.

If the serial may be issued in more than one volume simply because the contents are too extensive to fit in one volume.

When all parts are covered by one record, give a note in field 515. Whether or not the note is general or specific depends on whether the parts have separate titles, the likelihood of the titles remaining constant, and their overall importance. (CCM: 17.3.4)
