Indexes

CONSER identifies four types of Indexes common to serials.

⮚Indexes to single volumes or years of a serial (same publisher)

When an index is issued with each volume or year by the same publisher, the CONSER-instructed practice is not to record it in the bibliographic record in general.

⮚Cumulative indexes to multiple volumes or years of a serial (same publisher)

Where indexes cover more than one volume or year and are published by the same publisher, the CONSER-instructed practice is to record in the Cumulative index note (555). The cumulative index is noted whether it is published with an issue of the serial or is published separately. The index may be bound with the serial and still be noted in field 555. A formal or informal 555 note may be used. (CCM:17.5.3b1)

555 ## $a Vols. 1 (1927)-25 (1951) in v. 26, no. 1. (Formal note contains enumerative/chronological content)

555 ## $a Every third volume includes a cumulative index to the previous 10 years. (Informal note lacks enumerative/chronological content)

⮚Index to a serial that is published separately by a different publisher

An index published by a different publisher is to be cataloged separately as a serial or as a monograph according to CONSER. Give the title of the work being indexed as a subject heading, but not as an additional access point. (CCM:17.5.3b2a)
