Serials with Accompanying Material
(last updated: Aug. 2019)
For instructions on marking specific types of accompanying material, follow the guidelines in the appropriate section for each type.
Generally, serial volumes can be added in the usual way, with a note on the binding slip requesting a pocket for the accompanying CD, poster, etc. A pocket in the back of a bound volume may contain material relating to any of the issues in that volume.
In some cases it may be better for an affected issue to be added and bound separately. If so, and the issue with accompanying material falls in the middle of a volume, split the volume into smaller complete units preceding and following the separate issue.
Example:
vol. 13 (1979)
vol. 14, no. 1-8 (Jan.-Aug. 1987)
vol. 14, no. 9 (Sept. 1987) Â Â [issue with accompanying transparencies]
vol. 14, no. 10-12 (Oct.-Dec. 1987)
The accompanying material itself is not noted on the holdings record.
On the item record, update the Pieces field. The print volume counts as one piece, and each enclosed CD, CD-ROM, etc. counts as an additional piece.
