Supplements
As a general rule, do not treat a publication as a supplement unless the publisher has called it a supplement. (CCM: 17.4.1) Supplements can accompany individual issues or be an ongoing addition to the serial as a whole. A supplement accompanying an individual or single issue or volume may be mentioned in a 525 note unless the supplement has its own distinctive title and the contents warrant it, in which case it may be cataloged (Institutional prerogative) as a monograph. Ongoing supplements to the whole serial with their own numbering and/or designation are cataloged separately [as a serial], regardless of whether the supplement has its own title.Â
⮚Supplements accompanying a Single issue or volume.Â
A supplement to an individual issue or volume may be cataloged as a monograph or mentioned in a note on the record for the serial. The supplement may be cataloged as a monograph if the contents warrant it and the supplement carries its own distinctive title. If the supplement is merely called "Supplement" and the contents are not unique from those of the serial or worth analyzing, add a note to the serial bibliographic record. It is best to keep the note general, in case other supplements to individual issues are published in the future.

⮚Ongoing Supplements to the Whole (Parent) Serial
Ongoing supplements may include those having their own numbering and or designation (with or without a distinctive title), those not numbered, and those numbered with the main serial. Each of these will be treated differently
⮚When the supplement has its own number, create a separate serial record for the supplement. (CCM:17.4.3.2a) In the following situation, a link to the parent serial (BioEngineering news) is represented in the 772 field of the supplement (World biolicensing report) with a link to the the supplement in the parent record reported in 770 field.

⮚The supplement is not numbered. If a supplement is issued on a regular basis but does not carry numbering other than that of the main serial, it is mentioned as a note on the record for the main work using MARC fields 525 and 740. Do not create a separate record using the numbering of the main work as the numbering of the supplement. (CCM:17.4.3.2b)
