Varying Title Information

⮚Titles of Short Duration and Fluctuating Titles

Titles for newspapers can fluctuate, and a title change can occur but revert to its original or preceding title (a change lasting less than one year). Such fluctuations and changes are not treated as title changes or separate titles but as variant titles recorded in MARC field 246 with an explanation provided in subfield $i, if possible. Saturday and Sunday titles are generally treated as fluctuating titles and recorded in field 246 of the record for the main title. (CCM: 33.6.1)

⮚Running Title and Other Varying Forms of the Title

CONSER instructs the cataloger to record running titles and other title information appearing in an area of the newspaper other than the masthead as a variant title only if the following conditions exist: (1) if it differs substantially from the masthead title; (2) contributes to the identification of the newspaper; and (3) provides meaningful access.
