What is a series?
A series is defined in the RDA Glossary as a group of separate manifestations related to one another by the fact that each manifestation bears, in addition to its own title proper, a collective title applying to the group as a whole with or without numbering.
Note: in order for a series to exist under RDA it must be identified by a title |
A series may be issued as a serial. This is called a monographic series. A monographic series is
a group of monographs
that does not have a predetermined conclusion (serial definition)
each of which bears, in addition to its own title proper, a collective title applying to the group as a whole (series definition)
A series may be issued as a multipart monograph. A multipart monograph is
a group of monographs
that is complete or intended to be completed within a finite number of parts
each of which bears, in addition to its own title proper, a collective title applying to the group as a whole (series definition)
Series can have authors that can be persons, families, or corporate bodies. The access point will contain the name of the author if there is one.
What is not a series?
Some phrases might look like titles but not considered to be series titles. There is no need to create a authority record in these cases.
Examples: Social science (word or phrase indicating a broad subject or category) Novel (genre or characterizing word or phrase) A Tom Doherty Associates book (numbered or unnumbered statement of the commercial publisher) 25 años de paz (slogan, motto, prize, etc.) CRN 780206-00050 (number that cannot be associated with a series title) |
Information on how to treat these cases in the bibliographic record can be found in in LC-PCC PS 2.12 “Series or Phrases”
