EAL Student Interview Procedures

Introduce job responsibility briefly

Basically support regular East Asian Library technical services functions; acquisitions and cataloging; processing monographs and periodicals in all format of contents; books and digital copies, in all CJK languages. 

Expectation a. WORK position, NOT a sit job, no break, no cell phone checking, no emails or study works.

Expectation b. Sign-in and sign out with 15-min. intervals.

Expectation c. Dress properly and wear closed-toe shoes for safety reasons.

Discuss various main tasks of the position

Task a. Open packages and collect invoices

Task b. Transfer books by pushing book trucks and shelving books

Task c. Search through OCLC database to distinguish DLC/member/original copies.

Task d. Post cataloging book/dvd/microfilm processing: stamping, plating, labeling, call number writing etc.

Task e. Periodical switch

Task f. Table of contents (TOC) scanning

Ask student to introduce him/herself

Questions to choose from:

  1. Why are you interested in this position?
  2. What makes you a qualified candidate?
  3. Please describe your three best professional attributes? (attention to details/dependability/promptness are ideal)
  4. Are you familiar with library technical service work, cataloging, shelving?
  5. Do you have experience in CJK languages and subject?

Double check candidate’s availability and whether he/she is set up and approved in Time Collection, direct deposit setup

Professional Expectations For EAL Student Workers

  • Be aware that the operation of the library reflects upon the staff here at EAL and the overall impression of Princeton University.  Student conduct and performance must be in keeping with university expectations of professionalism.  Dress attire during shifts can be casual; however, no undergarments should be visible and students should arrive clean and alert.
  • For safety reasons, please wear closed-toe shoes.
  • The use of personal laptops or cell phones is NOT permitted during shifts; however, the use of headphones while working is okay.
  • Be very careful with materials.
  • There is to be NO FOOD while working.  Drinks are acceptable ONLY in containers with lids.  If you are working a long shift and need a break for food please inform your supervisor and sign out that you need a 15 minute break.
  • Cell phones should be kept on silent.
  • Performance on tasks is recorded by the supervisor.  If patterns of negligence in performing such duties arise students may be subject to disciplinary measures.
  • Students are expected to show up ON TIME for shifts.
  • Should you be unable to make your shift, you must email the supervisor prior to your scheduled time.  Please be proactive and communicative.
