Major Changes to the Title Proper

When determining whether the title has changed, consider all parts of the title proper (e.g. MARC field 245, subfields a, n, and p), but not the Other Title Information or changes to the Parallel Title only (subfield b). A title change is also considered separately from changes in the authorized access point for a corporate body; it doesn’t matter whether or not the authorized access point for a corporate body remains the same. If the title undergoes a major change, a new description is created. (CCM:16.2.3)

CONSER instruction on when to create a new description is fully informed by RDA. (CCM: 16.1.1) RDA has established five categories of changes to the title proper as Major requiring a new description unless the change is among those established by RDA as an Exception to the Major Change Rule.

However, when the change comes after the first five words and does not change the meaning of the title or indicate a change in the subject matter, consider the change to be minor. (CCM:16.2.3b)

⮚For Languages and scripts that do not divide text into words. 

1. The addition, deletion, change, or reordering of any component (i.e., a character or group of characters) of the title proper that changes the meaning of the title or indicates a different subject matter.

2. A change of name for a corporate body is included anywhere in the title if the changed name is for a different corporate body.
