053 submission procedure

Last update: July 25, 2018. This procedure has been revised since LC's announcement that they will no longer assign call numbers for literary authors.

Assigning 053s

This is not a requirement. Catalogers may decide for themselves if they wish to assign literature class numbers for authors of belles lettres.

Check call number

Search LCC for the call number that best represents the author.

Do a call number search in Voyager to confirm that the new literary author fits the Princeton shelflist.

Then confirm that it also fits the LC shelflist by search the LC catalog. You can either browse by call number, or use the “keyword” search. When doing the latter, select the “Expert” option from the dropdown menu near the search bar. Formulate the search as follows: 05xx “pr9199.4.g7?” (be sure to include the quotations marks and the question mark). If you get no result, try removing a digit or two from the cutter and try again.

Create/update NAR

Create or update authority heading for the author in question.

Add in the 053 #4 field with the vetted call number. Add a $5 NjP

Save to OCLC online save file.
