Always record the language of primary content in 008/35-37. (CONSER-RDA-CSR) CONSER instructs to record the language of the content in a note if it will assist identification and selection under the following situations: (CCM: 13.6.1)

The language or languages of the item are not apparent from the title data: text in French and English; title in English only. (CCM:13.6.1)

When the title appears in more than one language but the text is only in one language. (CCM:13.6.1)

When summaries and/or titles of contents are given in languages different from that of the text. (CCM:13.6.1)

When one or more languages cannot be transliterated or otherwise represented in the record because the language expertise is not available.

The Language note is given in conjunction with field 041 (Language code). (CCM:13.6.2)

More than one language. When the text is in more than one language, each is input preceded by a separate subfield $a code. If one language is predominant, input that code first; if no language is predominant, input all codes in alphabetical order. Input codes in lowercase; do not use punctuation between the codes.

Abstract or summaries in a language different from text. When the language of the summaries or abstracts is different from that of the text, it is given in coded form in field 041 subfield $b.

Resource a translation of the original text. For translations of the original text, subfield $h is used when the piece is a translation. The first indicator is set to value "1" and the language of the translation is given in subfield $a. Subfield $h contains the code for the language of the original or intermediate translation.  

English translation of French work:

041 1# $a eng $h fre

546 ## $a Text in English, translated from French.

If a publication is a translation and also includes a summary in the original language, set the first indicator to "1" and record the language of the summary in subfield $b.

041 1# $a eng $b dan $h dan

546 ## $a Text in English, translated from the Danish; summary in Danish.

A serial containing text in the original language and in English translation:

041 1# $a eng $a fre $h fre

546 ## $a Text in French with parallel English translation.

Note: Some serials (government reports) may be conveyed equivalently in two or more languages. This may not constitute a translation, just a work written word for word in two or more language.
