UPDATES IN PROGRESS: Some of the information below is now obsolete.

Catalog records for remote access e-serials

Princeton's remote access e-serials are not cataloged locally. In order to make them discoverable beyond the catalog, they are instead activated in two Ex Libris products: the SFX link resolver and the Summon discovery service. SFX enables linking from search results in various online discovery tools (e.g. indexes, databases, catalogs) to accessible online full text. It is also the source of the Library's A-Z e-Journals list. Summon indexes online content from a wide variety of providers and enables full-text searching for journal articles, book chapters, etc. through a single search box (Articles+).

Via the MARCit! service, Princeton receives catalog records for all e-serials activated in SFX. Records for new and updated titles are loaded into the catalog monthly. These records can be identified in Voyager by an 035 field that starts with (SFX) and an 856 field that starts with https://getit.princeton.edu. They have MFHDs attached, with location elf1, but holdings data is kept in SFX, not in Voyager. The holdings do appear in the public catalog. Links to online content lead first to a menu page where a user can select from available full-text sites.

MARCit! records may be full or brief, as available. The full ones are CONSER records, so should conform to normal cataloging standards, though they may have originally described a print version. The brief ones, derived from records in the SFX KnowledgeBase, contain only a few basic fields; fields may be missing, or may contain some non-standard constructions or codings. Neither full nor brief records are reviewed individually, and since all are subject to frequent replacement, minor corrections/enhancements are not usually made.

In many cases, the catalog also contains records for the same titles in print or other formats. MARCit! records are separate, but Voyager profiles have been established to include different format versions in the catalog display. Details on bib linking can be found here.
