Reusing Checklist Boxes

See the video from our 1/17/23 session on this topic and session slides.

Welcome to PUL Guides

We have several "Welcome to PUL" LibGuides with checklists customized for new Princeton community member audiences. These include:

Each guide has a checklist relevant for that audience whose content and links are maintained on the guide itself as a primary copy. However, the checklist boxes are reusable as assets to embed in other guides, customize further for a particular audience, and/or turn into a widget that could display in a webpage outside of LibGuides that accepts HTML embed codes. The following tutorial shows how to map or copy these checklists for your own guides and also how to reuse the content outside of Springshare.

Mapping a Checklist Box

If you would like to copy a checklist box as it appears in the primary guide and do not need to make edits, follow these steps to map the box to your guide:

  1. When editing your own guide, click the option to Add Box in whichever column you'd like the checklist.
  2. In the box that appears, click on the tab that says Reuse Existing Box, and then search for the word "Welcome" in the guide search to pull up which welcome checklist you'd like to include.
  3. In the Box drop-down, choose the checklist box that appears in the options. You can give it a new name in the Box Name field; otherwise, it will remain the same title as in the original guide.

  4. Since this is a mapped box and you will not be making any further edits to the checklist, you can ignore remaining options and click the blue Save button at the bottom to save your changes and apply the box to your guide.

Copying a Checklist Box

If you would like to copy a checklist box and edit/customize it to your audience, follow these steps to copy the box to your guide:

Choose the box position if relevant.
  4. Check off the box at the bottom that says Copy in order to make this box a copy of the original, meaning you will be able to edit it for your own needs; this also means that any updates made to the primary copy of the checklist will not carry over to your copy. Click the blue Save button to save your changes and apply the box to your guide.

Finding and Using the Widget Code

Any box in Guides can be embedded as a widget in an external webpage that accepts HTML embed code. To create a widget on another site:

  1. When signed into LibGuides, click on the Tools drop-down in the top menu and click on Widgets.
  2. In Widgets, click the tab that says Content Box. Then, do a search for "welcome" to pull up the four Welcome to PUL guides, and click the one from which you'd like the box widget. In the Box field, choose the box option that has Checklist in the title.
  3. Under Look & Feel, choose from a "simple" HTML code that embeds in a website, or a framed code that makes the content scrollable (you can see how both appear in the previews to the right of these options).
  4. Once you settle on which code you would like, copy the content in the Embed Code box that displays, and paste into your external website of choice (note: different websites/content managers have different ways of accepting embed codes).
