Alma Errors with Shared ReCAP Items

When a patron requests a shared ReCAP item from Harvard, NYP, or Columbia, the item is associated with the requestor’s account. If another patron wants to charge out the item before it returns to ReCAP, you might think you could simply discharge from the first patron’s account and then charge to the second patron. However, Alma will give the message “Loan blocked: Item is bound to a borrowing request for another patron”.

To work around this, we need to put a hold on for the second patron. Please follow these steps:

1. Discharge the item in Scan In Items.

2. Search for the item record in the persistent search bar using search type “Physical Items” and search index “Barcode”.

3. The item record will appear. In the more actions menu (three dots icon), select “Request” and place a request for the second patron. See information on placing requests here.

4. Using Manage Patron Services, charge the item to the second patron’s account.
