Discovery Vision
PUL’s discovery environment supports the Library’s mission and vision by connecting researchers and learners—our users—to rich and diverse physical and digital research resources and services. Through a global, interconnected infrastructure that encompasses people and technology, we envision a discovery environment grounded in the principles of user agency, equitable access, balanced sustainability and innovation, and interconnectivity, which inspires a journey of curiosity and engagement.
Principles
Principle: User Agency
Users are in control of their environment, data, and learning. We understand that the discovery process for our users includes both library and non-library tools and resources. Our platforms are designed for self-sufficiency by using information literacy principles to allow for multiple modes of access, use common web design patterns and conventions, and are driven by user feedback, testing, and research.
Principle: Equitable Access
Discovery systems provide equitable access to ensure all users can perform their research comfortably and successfully. Our platforms are useful, usable, desirable, and safe for diverse audiences. To be usable, systems and materials are accessible by all users regardless of abilities and use of assistive technology. We strive to describe and present resources in ways that minimize harm, mitigate algorithmic and personal biases and are transparent about generated results.
Principle: Sustainability and Innovation
Work on discovery systems prioritizes efficient, iterative, and impactful innovation. We recognize that innovation spans implementing new technologies and continuous improvement but must be balanced with maintaining and sunsetting services to enable a healthy discovery system. Maintenance should be ongoing, simple to do, and positioned to make our systems secure and easy to use. Services should also leverage the talent and expertise of all library staff. The discovery environment will only be sustainable when the aspirations for our services do not exceed the capacity of the Library, minimize environmental impact, and meet user needs.
Principle: Interconnected Environment
The discovery environment is a sociotechnical ecosystem composed of users, staff, technology, spaces, infrastructure, metadata, workflows, and goals. Its policies, features, and interfaces will work together to meet different types of users where they are to help them in the best way possible. Components of our discovery experience have clearly defined and unique goals and success metrics as a strategy to meet user needs in support of a shared vision. Our users will see discovery at PUL as a single comprehensive and supportive environment.
